How does esoteric energy connect with traditional psychology?

Entering into the world of Woowoo?

The chakras may seem like bogus vocabulary to many of us, I know I was skeptical of all the esoteric language in the beginning; choosing to rather base all my understandings of the psyche, personality expressions and imbalances on neuroscience and hormones.

It wasn’t until I felt the effects of shifts in my psyche and emotional regulation through working with the energy systems, and then sharing the benefits and seeing how it helped others that I really started trusting the explanations of the subtle energy centers which have been explored for centuries in yogic philosophy.

When I started opening up to the world on energy work it became clear that the energetic anatomy does in fact intertwine with the world of neuroscience and emotional regulation and Neurolinguistic programming (NLP).

Chakras Defined

By understanding the yogic chakra systems one can begin to understand emotional imbalances and then effectively apply NLP tools.

So what are chakras?

Chakra translates from Sanskrit to mean wheel, these wheels relate to vortexes of energy. These energy centers can be found through out the body where meridians lines meet or cross. Meridians are the energy lines throughout the energetic body that carries prana (life force energy).

For thousands of years these energy systems have been studied, what was learnt was that when there are blockages in these energy centres (Chakras) it creates disharmony in day to day experiences and emotional reactions which can ultimately dictate our outward expressions or personality traits.

There are a multitude of chakras throughout the body; however for purposes of easy understanding and applying NLP tools, we focus on the 7 Chakras along the spine which are the focal points relating to traits and aspects of life experiences.

The Root Chakra

The root chakra (mullahadra) is locate at the base of the spine and it relates to our ability to feel supported, grounded and safe. It is the base of all chakras and relates to our basic needs, survival and primal instincts.

When the root chakra is balanced we feel centered and grounded, we are able to implement healthy boundaries and trust our own life choices.

The base chakra also relates to our ability to be productive, attracting abundance, anchoring securely into our purpose, attracting the correct support systems and feeling safe in the unfolding of life.

The emotion of fear can block the root chakra; it can translate into a victim mentality, often created by a negative neurolinguistic belief cycles of being unlovable or unwanted.

When the root chakra is blocked an outward expressions of anxiety, inability to focus on the present moment, or commit to people and tasks as well as a feeling of being disorganized may be experienced.

The Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra (Swadhisthana) is located around the lower abdomen connected to our ability to go with the flow and it is related to our connections with self and others.

This energy center is referred to as the seat of our emotions and our creative energy.  When this chakra is in balance we are able to have healthy relationships with mature communication and healthy connection and passion.

When this chakra is aligned new ideas are able to flow easily, we can collaborate with friends, family and loves ones and be expressive.  The Sacral Chakra relates to the humming bird energy of enjoying the sweet nectar of life with gratitude.

This chakra is connected to your sexual energy, so when it is blocked one may experience frigidity and impotence, or suppression of our true self (loss of identity within a relationship or friendship.)

The Solar Plexus Chakra

The Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) is located above the navel below the diaphragm. This is our fire center where we hold our will power and determination.

The Manipura connects to our self- esteem and confidence, it relates to the energy of the Tiger as it is the main power center that allows you to step into your power and truth with razor focus and discipline.

When setting goals, activate and ignite this center with deep diaphragmatic fire breath, let this clarify the action plan and dictate the discipline needed to allow the correct path to be followed to achieve these goals.

This energy center in balance will provide self-mastery, discipline and deep respect for self and others.

When this energy center is blocked one will experience a low self-esteem, a lack of discipline and the inability to share skills or recognize talents.

The Heart Chakra

The Heart Chakra  (Anahata Chakra) is located in the middle of the chest, described as the heart center. It relates to the ability to receive and express love, compassion and gratitude.

This is where we are able to nurture the inner child and cultivate healthy connections with less judgment or attachment to outcomes. When this center is balanced one is able to recognize good intentions in others and let go of fear of past hurts.

When the heart chakra is blocked intimacy may be challenging, fear of attachment and the inability to forgive yourself or others may be experienced.

When the heart chakra is balanced decisions from a place of divine wisdom and unconditional love can be made easily.

 The Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra (Vishuddhi) is located in the center of the throat. This relates to the power we hold to speak our truth, it also relates to our ability to listen to others and be heard ourselves.

When the throat chakra is blocked one may experience, physical blockages of phlem, blocked sinuses, hoarse voice but on an energetic level it relates to the feeling of not being heard or the inability to speak your truth, because of fear of being misunderstood or not liked.

When this chakra is blocked it can be expressed through “blabber mouths” gossip, lies or the inability to voice opinions. Blockages can be experienced through ineffective communication styles and the inability to fully “hear” or absorb what other people are expressing.

When this chakra is balanced effective communication, expression and confidence in expressing your truth, thoughts and ideas will be experienced.

The Third Eye Chakra

The Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) is located at the brow between the eyes. This is connected to our intuition and your inner knowledge.

When this chakra is balanced one will experience a vivid imagination, clear insights and a deep intuition. Memory is improved and the mind is calm and at peace. The soul purpose is clear and the progressive path can be led with intuition and insight.

When this chakra is blocked listlessness may be experienced and the memory may be foggy and. Blockages here can translate into an unclear purpose or fear of making the wrong decisions, with a lack of direction.

The Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) is located on the top of the head, connected to our pineal gland and believed to be the connection point to higher realms. This is where our soul and divine energy unite and this is where we experience the connection self and bliss.

When this chakra is blocked one may experience depression, alienation and  confusion in this human experience.

When this chakra is balanced one will experience an awakening of consciousness and the clarity that aligns with the soul  (Atman) connection.
