What are Bija Mantras?

When practising traditional Hatha Yoga, there are seven cleansing bija mantras associated with the chakras.

The Bija Mantra refers to the sound vibrations that we can create to ignite the movement of energy within our subtle anatomy.

Below is a guide to each Bija Mantra alongside its associated chakra and element.

LAM for the Root Chakra, which is associated with the element of Earth.
VAM for the Sacral Chakra which is associated with the element of water.
RAM for the Solar- Plexus Chakra which is associated with the element of fire.
YAM for the Heart Chakra, the middle chakra, where the elements meet.
HAM for the Throat Chakra which is associated with the element of air.
AUM for the Third Eye Chakra, which is associated with the element of light
AH for the crown chakra is associated with the element of the cosmic realm.

When we explore the elements of each chakra alongside the mantra for each chakra; we may be able to identify where we are holding blockages.

I will go into more detail about each chakra and how they are expressed in our lives in upcoming articles. The Bija Mantras are a starting point to get used to which sound vibration connects to which energy centre within the body.
